In 2018, I took my first trip to anywhere in Europe to meet with other Quaker authors and publishers in England. I also traveled among Friends in what’s referred to as “1652 Country;” the Cumbria countryside is where Quakerism had its start in 1652 when Quakers first drew together. Visiting there added greatly to my connection to this faith tradition.
Now, I’m back again, this time joined by my husband and another Quaker couple. I drafted this post early in October and scheduled it for publication while I’m still away (I wonder what early Friends would think about that!). In addition to “1652 Country,” we also plan to visit Cornwall.
Once our friends depart, Jerry and I will take an overnight ferry from Portsmouth, England to Saint-Malo, France (I’m always on the lookout for Writer-in-Residence opportunities on other ferries). Saint-Malo, a walled city that figures prominently in Anthony Doerr’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, All the Light We Cannot See, will be our first stop in Brittany.
We haven’t yet decided where we’ll stop when we leave the coast and before spending some time in Paris; you’ll have to wait for the accounts when I return.
A bientôt!
Ooh, I’m so excited to hear about St. Malo! That book was my favorite read a few years ago. Bon voyage!
Mine too. Today is our last day in Cornwall. Tomorrow we’re off to St Malo by boat. À bientôt!
I love hearing about these travels Iris. It sounds like a wonderful trip. I look forward to seeing you when we’re both back on the other side of the pond! Debra

Thanks, Debra. Your travels in Italy sound fantastic, too. We’ll have many stories to share when we see each other again.
